Thursday Post # 2
We are all struggling with the horror in Haiti. It is just so painful. Sister is in training with IJM right now and is being exposed daily to the soul crushing violence that humans relentlessly inflict on other humans. That is just so painful. It is easy to become hopeless and shut down and look away. But when we do, let us catch ourselves. Let us find our Jesus glasses, slip them on, and then take another look. With our perspectacles on, we might just see, in the tears and in the rubble, an invitation to join God as He weeps and then works. In the post below are a few ideas about how to move from weeping to working, or how to do them both simultaneously. I once heard a minister say that “compassion is your pain in my heart and then through my hands. If it doesn’t hit the through my hands part, it’s not compassion.” See Erin C’s comment below if money isn’t the way you’re being invited to become involved. Monkees are creative, and we don’t give up until we find a way. Feel free to leave ideas for other giving opportunities.

SOS Children's Villages

Dear Glennon,

You have seen by now all the coverage that the devastating earthquake in Haiti is receiving. Staff from around the world have been working non-stop since 6 pm EST last night assessing the situation, making sure the children in our Haiti Villages are okay, and beginning to respond — with water, medical supplies and places to sleep.

The entire area is in very bad shape, and children are in danger. In addition to ensuring the safety and health of the children who live in our Villages in Haiti, we are opening our doors to children in the surrounding area who have no homes to go to. We are using everything we have to make sure children are safe.

We have asked for your help before, and it has never been more urgent.

Thank you for your support.

  1. I just called CWS to find out about other sites for dropping off hygiene and baby kits. Unfortunately they don't keep a list of churches that do this, the churches do it on their own BUT he did say if we are willing to pay the shipping to their service center, they will ship them on to Haiti.

I love this idea and my kids were touched and excited to the point of tears this morning when I told them we'd found something we could do! Thank you so much Chimmy!!

The CWS address if anyone else is interested:
    Brethren Service Center
    601 Main Street
    PO Box 188
    New Windsor MD 21776

  5. Oh boo. Thanks for checking into it. I should have known corporations weren't going to do anything to help anything but their own bottom line. :(

  11. UPS will ship any package under 50 lb. to Haiti for free – blankets, shoes, etc. Unfortunately, I don't know where to send them. Anyone? Erin is exactly right about her $10 donation. It adds up – the $10 text message donations had raised 4.7 million for the Red Cross as of last night.

  19. Baby and Hygiene Kits are a great family project:

  21. Oh one more thing – is anyone doing anything with their kids? Mine are very interested in helping and it just feels a bit in adequate to say "we'll send some money." We've been praying and that is certainly something powerful, but they are interested in something more tangible. Anyone have any suggestions?

  33. you can also provide your assistance through Mercy Corps: http://www.mercycorps.org

vrwfox – I LOVE PIH and the work they do! here's a link to an article that gives some background into haiti's struggle and a big shout out to Partners in Health.

Let's continue to help through the power of prayer. A friend reminded me to day that the human spirit is resilient! Haiti will pull through as a nation of survivors!

My friend Margarette is still trying to account for family members and dealing with the outcome of their searches both good and bad.

Please continue to keep her and the entire family in your thoughts and prayers.

  43. Here is Erin C's Comment:

I commented after the "Fruits of Sickness" post, so it's technically the one after the one below. I just was thinking about donating something other than money–blood, blanket, clothes, whatever. I did make a teensy donation to Doctors Without Borders last night, and what was so awesome was that my friends on FB started telling me what they had donated, and we piled it all together and realized that, in a few short hours, we had all pooled together $130 to go to Haiti for aid. I had felt sort of yucky about my donation, since it was really small ($10), and then I stopped and realized that every little bit helps. It all adds up. I felt much more connected last night after that.
