Nov 272009

I’m at Bubba and Tisha’s house on the water, and I just woke to discover that it’s raining hard outside. I couldn’t be happier. I secretly love rainy days, for the same reason that I secretly love when my kids get mildly sick. Rain and low grade fevers are invitations to stay unshowered in pajamas and snuggle on the couch. The rain says “don’t bother making plans, really. Just relax.” I certainly enjoy the sun too, but it can be a little bossy and self centered, with all its shining and shining and insisting that we get dressed and go outside to enjoy it. The rain is less demanding, and I appreciate that.

Okay, now for the big news.

It has been said that there are no stupid questions. I am about to prove that theory wrong once and for all. Here goes –

Hey internet…Can you keep a secret?

Because we’ve got some exciting secrets to discuss, my precious Monkees.

One of the people who helped publish my first book has suggested that it’s time to transform Momastery into a book proposal. He thinks we could get published and revolutionize a whole lot more Monkees. I KNOW. It’s exciting. The Revolution might have an opportunity to convince many more people to try being less jerky.

I know that this is wonderful news for all Monkeekind. But I am struggling, friends. I was supposed to have this proposal done and mailed two weeks ago, and I haven’t even started. Every time I try to write it I turn into a little teeny eeny mouse paralyzed with fear. I sit motionless at my computer and the only parts of my body that move are my shifty mousy eyes which are propped wide open in terror. It’s not good. I’m scared I’m going to let us down. But the good news is that I think I’ve identified my problem. I’ve been trying to go it alone, and that is never how Revolutionary Monkees do. I need you.

Neither Momastery nor the Monkee Revolution have ever been about me. They have always been about you. You have made this blog what it is. First of all, your encouraging responses have given me the confidence to dig deeper and to keep on writing. Because I did have a hunch that maybe I could write and maybe you’d like it. But I’ve also seen the American Idol auditions, so I know that a whole lot of people suspect they are good at things that they should actually never, ever attempt to do publicly.

But when I sang, you stood up and clapped, and then you started singing with me – and that is the moment that our song went from pretty good to knock- your –socks- off fantastic. People write to me again and again to say that your comments are their very favorite part of the blog. To them I always say well thank you, thank you very much. But I get it. Me too.

I am going to use the next two weeks to bang out this proposal and send it off to my editor. Because I believe deep in my bones that our revolution is worthy of national attention. The world will be better for having heard our message of love and inclusion and humility. To that end, here’s what I’m asking of you. Can you pray for me? Can you pray that God will tie me up so that every word that is written is His and not mine? Can you pray that He will transform my weakness into writing that will feed, comfort, and awaken sleeping Monkees everywhere? And if you’re not a pray-er, could you think brilliant thoughts and email them to me for the book? That’d be great. And you better believe that when it gets published, ours will be the first book with 217 names, or however many monkees there are when the time comes, in the acknowledgements. Yep. That’s the plan. Because this book will be about and by and for YOU. Also, because that’ll make it seem longer.

You know, all of sudden, I’m feeling pretty good about this new adventure. Because now that I think about it, people are always offering me this lovely compliment:

Glennon: What you don’t know could fill a book.”

Maybe they’re on to something….

One last thing- even while I’m busy working on the proposal, the Monkee show will go on. Our show will always go on. It’s important to the Revolution that we meet every day without fail. So this post will stay up on Monday, since most people will probably wait until then to read it. Then, for the following week and a half, guest writers will be posting on the blog. They are excited and very, very nervous.

While you read their hearts’ offerings, please think of an encouraging comment that you’ll leave for them. They will be checking every ten minutes, throughout their entire day, to see if you liked them. Trust me on this one. Please be gentle with their hearts. I love each one of them very much.

Also, while you read…consider what you’ll write about when it’s your turn. Because you see where this is going, right? This blog, this book, this revolution is about you. Each of us has something equally important to share. Shoot me an email when you’re ready to Say What You Need to Say.

I love you Cheeky Monkeys.

What a wild ride, huh?

  2. You have discovered the key to a long marriage, or friendship: when I sang you clapped and then you started singing with me…

  3. I'm anxiously awaiting to read the unfolding of this bc i thought "mo money mo problems", but i would be beyond thrilled if there actually were going to be a book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Glennon,
This is incredibly exciting news! You deserve it like no other. Is it possible to preorder a book that has yet to be written? If so, please send me the info!

  6. Glennon Congratulations! Congrats to all Monkeys every where!!! I remember how you sent me the email telling me to check out your blog because of our similar sense of humor. I feel blessed to have a place to come and smile everyday. I read the things that you (and other monkeys) do with your family and I find such similarities between all of us and it gives me the ability to smile.
We all have "a story" and I appreciate that you have shared yours with hopes of encouraging others to share theirs. I have shared with you some of my story and I know that I have one more wonderful person on my side cheering me on and praying for me. So I think you should do what comes so naturally to you and continue to share your story, your everyday struggles and the struggles of those around you who help to keep you going. That is what we are here for support, laughter and strength.
And just one final comment I know you said that you want God to speak through you, but I want you to give yourself more credit. God is with you in every adventure you take to guide you, but your words come from you and those are the words that bring me back here every day. God will be by your side to guide you and support you, and so will the rest of us. Trust me he has great plans for you and for each one of us, we just have to choose to take the right path, sometimes we will falter but we never make a mistake in his eyes. Our God is a forgiving God and I think that is the most important thing we can learn and you help us to recognize that! Love you…

  7. Amazing! I love reading Momastry! It's inspiring and eye opening. I would read it over and over!

  8. I love how something that seemed impossible just comes together when the time is right and you've taken time to ask God to be with you. I will continue to pray for you– it is so clear to me that the Holy Spirit is moving through your words and creating a community here. What a gift to share with the world!

  9. Go Glennon Go!

  10. Monkees…

I re-started the proposal this morning and THINGS STARTED TO FALL TOGETHER for the first time.

You are magical, magical monkees and your love and support and confidence and prayers were exactly what was needed.

I won't let you down. I am going to work my Monkee bottom off so I can get back to you as soon as possible. And to answer the question a lot of you have emailed me, no, no, no I am not leaving this blog. You will have to quit me before I'll ever quit you.

More will be revealed soon. Hopefully to me.

    Keep praying…

  11. You know I'm praying for you and for all monkeekind. Writers are seekers, we seek inspiration as much as we seek to inspire. I have no doubt that over the next couple of weeks, as God speaks, you will hear it.

As Jennifer mentioned, you've been doing post after post.

    Thank you

  12. That's awesome Glennon! You are the inspiration for many woman out there reading your blog. Thanks for everything you do!

  13. Glennon – I'm just back from Thanksgiving vacation (a week a the beach!) where I read Eat Pray Love. The ENTIRE time I was reading I kept thinking "Glennon should REALLY write a BOOK." Catching up on Momastery just now I was sooo happy to see today's post. I'm impressed you carved out time this week to work on the proposal. So stop reading these – go work!
    :) Paula

  14. Late, but hopefully relevant.

First, wouldn't your peeps here be MOMkees with an M? It's MOMastery… I know, there's no song with the momkees. But there should be. Maybe in French.

Second, my hope and prayer for you G is that you listen to the Lord on where you go with this. My concern for you is that you will be overwhelmed with demands made on you by this new venture. You are so strong, and yet still so fragile.

Anchor it all in prayer, dear heart. And I'll be there on my knees with you. Of course, since I'm old enough to be your mom, my knees will give out before yours and I'll be stuck forever.

    LY, K

  15. I know just what I'll post… our phone call today! (sunday's call)

  16. Glennon, such big news! Congratulations :) Sending positive thoughts, vibes, prayers your way…so I can say "That was me!" (stole your line for this one) when the Monkee book proposal gets accepted without a second thought. It is going to be wonderful! I am so thrilled for you and thank you so much for inviting all of us to come along on the wild ride with you. Please know you have amazing talent and we appreciate that you share it with us (and soon to be many others!):)

  17. This is so exciting! I am THRILLED. I have nothing to add except my PRAYERS for you as you forge ahead w/ the proposal.

BTW, I work in a small Christian bookstore, so you had better be ready to do a book signing for me when the time comes! :)

  18. OK, I'm a little cautious with this one. The reason being – I don't want you to be such a huge success that you move away and leave your "CC"!!
You know we all want the best for you. You and your family bring such a ray of light and laughter into our lives and we are happy for any success.
I'd be happy to help out with the kids as you take on this proposal. My kids would love it too! Just let me know when you need us and we'll be there! (We'll also pray for you too!!)

  19. Glennon,
You were always destined for great things and I bet many of us knew that long before you did. I'm just excited that the rest of us can be a part of it too. I'm so very proud of you.

On another note, this will be the second time I've been acknowledged in a book, but the first one was a philosophy textbok and I suspect this one will be more likely to be actually read instead of re-sold. So thanks for giving me a second chance! 😉

  20. Kathie wrote, "You have a way to make me want to be a better person, but I don't feel bad for not being my best just yet." How do you do that?? It's a gift. And I think that you have to work hard, really hard, to be worthy of your gift. Thank you for taking inspiration from God and then laboring over every paragraph, sentence, and word. You are changing the world one Monkee at a time.
We love you, G! You can so do this.

  21. Glennon!

I am so excited for you. You have encouraged, comforted, strengthened, and loved me and many others with your words. You must share this with the world. And I must admit… I am psyched to be in on the ground floor of something so awesome. It's like singing a song before it hits the top of the charts, or watching Oprah before she had her own show, or dare I say it, reading a blog before…

I am humbled by your requests for prayer and partnership in this endeavor and am so so happy to help in this way. Praying for God's divine hands to hold your hands when you type and hold your heart when you pour out. Praying for His arms (like those of a Kung fu master) to protect your thoughts from any doubt and to hug you tenderly when you cry out. Praying that His feet will ground you and remind you what it's all about.

We will miss you. So hurry up, get this done, and come back to tell us all about it.

  22. Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace.

Here's to your very meaningful, life-giving words and presence!
Sending you much focus, inspiration and peace!

  23. You are magical! Prayers always!

  24. This is such exciting news. I found your blog by accident and it was by far the best accident I have ever been in. I find you to be very inspiring and you do it with such a sense of humor. You have a way to make me want to be a better person, but I don't feel bad for not being my best just yet. I am a work in progress. I have a feeling I may have to start sharing you with my fiends….but as someone posted on FB, I'm not ready to let everyone in on my secret just yet. Congratulations! I'll be praying!

  25. Wow! And YAY! Congratulations Glennon! I'm praying for you. I know you can do it.

  26. Wow! If you turned this into a book I could stop printing out your entries for mom! I'll be sending you the best vibes ever…please yell if you need anything. And CONGRATS!!

  27. …and in case all these encouraging thoughts aren't propelling you forward yet…I will nudge you on with this one: You'd be letting us down more if you don't try.

I know–low blow. Sorry. But I'm just thinking of how salty all your guest writers will be to find out that you spent the time off shopping online at Pottery Barn. :)

Seriously, you can do this! Don't worry about proposal reviewer's voices. Just put your fingers in your ears and sing louder!

  28. You know, I think I've been waiting for this post. I just had a feeling that another egg (book) was going to be hatching soon.

I completely identify with fear. Paralyzing fear. But you have the tried-and-true faith to KNOW that God will see you through this, provided you take the baby steps and walk through the fear. That is how you got the courage that made us all fall into line behind you, fearless Monkee leader that you are.

  29. Bonzo, we have never met, but I am just *sure* you are my kind of gal. Loved your song.

  30. Brava dear Glennon! This is truly joyous. You deserve a bigger audience and all the good stuff that comes with it. Bang away on those keys, girl!

  31. G,
I have been thinking about how I could help you all morning, what I could say. . . ? As I went on with my day, and I got side-tracked by different things, I checked my e-mail for the 85th time and came upon an an e-mail I get once a week. It was an excerpt from one of Max Lucado's books. Here is a link to it: UpWords with Max Lucado (I had to remove the link, it wouldn't let me post it. If you want to read it google "upwords with Max Lucado. Sorry.
I am desparately trying to figure out what I like to do and am also good at . . . Then it dawned on me! I am very good at encouraging people. I get excited about things and I pass that excitement right along to others.
Well, I am SO excited about you and momastery and the monkees, I can't even stand it! Get writing Master Monkee! That is what you are good at. That is how you exhale. That is where your passion lies. You already have it all right there inside you. The way you think and write is so touching and true and honest. I have read all of your posts and most of the responses. It amazes me how your story is my story, but then someone else writes that it is their story, and so on and so on. And for the readers who aren't recovering from some sort of addiction, you are teaching them about compassion and hope and faith that there is someone bigger, smarter, and perfect in charge of us and their loved ones who might be struggling with one. And don't even get me started about how much I relate to everything you write about motherhood. I love it all. I love that I am learning how to not be jerk one day at a time.
You, My Dear Sweet Glennon, are exactly where you are supposed to be. Doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing. And I am going to stop worrying about what and where I am supposed to be and, start praying for you! When I take the focus off myself, I tend to get a lot more done, so I am right where I am supposede to be. Awesome!
Now I can go off and battle the Black Friday sales and not have to worry about anything! Love to you and all the Monkees.
    Susie Q.

  32. One of my oldest friends and I have been referring to ourselves as monkeys since a night of revelry and silliness at basketball camp in the 7th grade when she happened to be wearing a Monkees t-shirt. We then proceeded to write several songs about monkeys – more specifically being monkey friends – in the remaining years of middle school, and we still sing them to each other to this day. I thought I might share one with you now for inspiration. (We wrote this one in French. True. I will translate below for non-French speaking monkees.):

    Nous sommes les singes amies
    Tu es le singe aussi
    J’adore toi, tu adore moi
    Nous sommes amour.
Tu es trés trés trés drôle
    Et vous prenez le rôle
De mon amie, le singe jolie
    tous les jours.

    We are monkey friends
    You are a monkey, too
I love you, you love me
    We are in love.
You are very very very funny
    And you take the role
Of my friend and a beautiful monkey
    every day.

G-bird, I will sing this to you in person one of these days. Now go and show that proposal who its mama is.

    love, bonzo

  33. Glennon, I have been reading your past posts in the evenings since I am right now without a book to read. Your words are inspiring and encouraging. You have gotten me to open up and take a look at myself (the good and bad) so that I can have more meaningful relationships with others. Believe it or not your blog has helped me to have more patience with my girls and my husband. You have helped me to look toward a higher power everyday as opposed to when I just need it. Our new house motto is to "treat others as you would like to be treated" (which is tough with three girls under the age of 7). I am more relaxed and much happier (which makes for a happier family). I think a book is an excellent idea and it will definitely be well received by the public. Best of luck!!

  34. I always thought that your blog was a book all it's own and that wach blog you write could be it's own chapter. I'm not even sure you need to write a new book, just copy and paste your blog and put Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc…

I would read it again and again and again.

  35. G, your inspiring words have led me on a path to forgiveness and healing my soul. You are also helping me in being accountable for my own actions and words that may have hurt some along the way. I am working hard on mending those hard feelings and turning things around. I am a work in progress, but watch out, I will be saved!

  36. yes, courtney, clip art!! brilliant!
perfect. everyone share your ideas. tell me what to do, pretty please.

  37. wow! That's pretty amazing! you set out to do some writing and have united hundreds of women. And now you have an opportunity to unite even more. That is pretty inspiring!!!

    Nicole McG

  38. A wild ride indeed! I am thrilled to have been a part of this blossoming revolution and who better to lead us than you, Glennon. I have been quietly praying for you. Praying all along that your words would reach more and more people. That your inspiration and love would help to change our thinking, our attitudes, our lives. You are amazing Glennon and I will continue to pray.

Oh…and can your new book have clip art included?? 😉
    love you girl!
